Penrith Anglican College audiences were transported somewhere over the rainbow as students brought The Wizard of Oz to life in a vibrant and memorable College musical.

Performed across five shows in June, the show was warmly celebrated by families, friends and guests from within the PAC community and beyond. From the moment Dorothy stepped onto the stage, the familiar story of friendship, courage and finding your way home was shared with energy, colour and heart.

The much-loved musical followed Dorothy’s journey from Kansas to the Land of Oz, where she met the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Cowardly Lion, faced the Wicked Witch of the West, and discovered that the qualities she was searching for were closer than she realised.

Across the performances, students embraced the challenge of acting, singing, choreography, music and stagecraft. They stepped into iconic roles known by generations and brought their own confidence, humour and expression to the story.

Audience members praised the musical for its imagination and polish, from the vibrant costumes and familiar songs to the sets, lighting, live music and backstage work that helped create the world of Oz. The show was described as “brilliant”, “amazing” and “fabulous”, with each performance revealing the care, creativity and commitment behind it.

The musical also reflected the depth of PAC’s Performing Arts program, where students are given opportunities to explore their gifts, learn new skills and work together across year groups. For many students, being part of The Wizard of Oz meant more than performing on stage. It meant rehearsing with discipline, listening to direction, supporting one another, taking creative risks and contributing to something much larger than themselves.

That spirit was recognised in reflections shared after the final show, with one staff member saying to students, “You have written another chapter in the history of musical theatre at PAC and it was absolutely fantastic.”

A College musical is made possible by many hands. Behind every performance were countless hours of rehearsal, preparation, design, organisation and problem-solving. Cast members, musicians, crew, staff, families and parent helpers all played an important role in bringing the show together.

From the colour of Munchkinland to the drama of the Wicked Witch, from the warmth of Dorothy and her friends to the sparkle of the Emerald City, the musical created a wonderful sense of celebration each time the curtain rose.

PAC is proud of every student who contributed to The Wizard of Oz, whether on stage, in the band, backstage or supporting the musical in other ways. Together, they created a special experience for audiences and a lasting memory for the College community.

Like Dorothy’s journey, the musical reminded us that courage, wisdom, heart and belonging are often found in the people walking beside us.
