Patrick Beach makes his mark on the World Cup stage
Posted : 10 July 2026
The Penrith Anglican College community is celebrating former student Patrick Beach, whose breakthrough FIFA World Cup 2026™ campaign with the CommBank Socceroos captured attention across Australia.
Australia’s World Cup campaign has now come to an end, with the Socceroos eliminated in the Round of 32 after a 1–1 draw with Egypt after extra time and a 4–2 loss on penalties. While the result was heartbreaking for Australian football fans, Patrick’s performances across the tournament were a major highlight and marked an unforgettable chapter in his fast-rising career.
Patrick, who attended PAC until Year 9 before leaving in 2018 to pursue his football career, started in goal for Australia in its opening Group D match against Türkiye in Vancouver.
It was a bold selection by Socceroos Head Coach Tony Popovic, with Patrick chosen ahead of experienced captain Mat Ryan for one of the biggest matches of Australia’s campaign. Patrick responded with composure, confidence and a clean sheet as Australia claimed a memorable 2–0 win.
His performance quickly became one of the stories of Australia’s tournament. Patrick made eight saves against Türkiye, including several important stops as Australia defended against a dangerous attacking side. His eight saves were the most ever made by an Australian men’s goalkeeper in a World Cup match, and the most by any goalkeeper on tournament debut since 2002.
For a player making just his third appearance for the national team, it was a remarkable performance on football’s biggest stage.
Patrick continued to play an important role for Australia throughout the tournament. He kept another clean sheet in the Socceroos’ 0–0 draw with Paraguay, a result that secured Australia’s place in the knockout rounds as Group D runners-up. In the Round of 32 against Egypt, he again produced a crucial performance, including a phenomenal late save to keep Australia in the match and send the game into extra time.
His impact was felt well beyond the pitch. In Melbourne, the City of Port Phillip temporarily renamed St Kilda Beach as “Patrick Beach” for the remainder of Australia’s World Cup campaign, in recognition of his performances and the excitement he helped create around the Socceroos.
For the PAC community, it has been a very special experience to see a former student represent Australia at the FIFA World Cup and become part of a national sporting story. Patrick’s journey from Orchard Hills to the Socceroos is one that has been followed with great pride by many who remember him from his time at the College.
Patrick’s brother Matt, who graduated from PAC in 2018, also attended the College from Kindergarten and has gone on to be a noted softball player, coach and umpire. The Beach brothers were proud members of Cranmer House, and the family is well known to many across the College community.
Patrick’s World Cup performances were significant not only in his own career, but also as a proud moment for his family, his former school and all those who have followed his football journey.
Congratulations Patrick. The PAC community is very proud of all you have achieved and will continue cheering you on as your career goes from strength to strength.
